An oldie but goodie…
An oldie but goodie…
(Keep an eye out for yours truly…wink.)
As many of you may know, the good folks over at Grenco Science has shown both myself and Mickey Avalon lots of love. Both Mickey and I have tried various “personal vaporizer” products, however, we agree that the GPen does in fact crush the competition. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the personal vaporizer phenomenon, brands such as GPen, Cloud Vaporizer and Atmos have been manufacturing products which are similar to electronic cigarettes, only they are designed for smoking the finest medical marijuana wax/oil concentrates. Much like electronic cigarettes, each of these products consist of a battery, heating element and reservoir. Some products come with pre-filled cartridges which you must order online or hunt down at your local medical marijuana dispensary (which can be a huge pain in the ass). The product I will be reviewing today will be the GPen original and Micro G from Grenco Science, both of which allow you to load your own wax/oils which can be found at your local dispensary.

When you purchase an Original GPen, it comes with a battery, original Gtank (extra tanks also available in the package), wall charger, USB charger, a packing tool and two glass containers to preserve your favorite waxes or oils. These kits are available starting at $79.95 and there are various accessories which are compatible with this product.
The first thing I noticed when unpacking this product was the weight and sturdy construction of the GPen. It is a nice, solid product that can handle some abuse, especially if it is equipped with the original tank, which uses a plastic sleeve and is immune to cracking/shattering. Both the plastic and glass original GTank feature the same design – a centralized heating element that has a wick running through the center which absorbs any oil. The wick aids in making sure you get the most out of your wax/oil supply. The only downside to the original GTank is their difficulty to load the heating element as the plastic/glass sleeve comes up a bit higher than the heating element, limiting your room to maneuver. This can make loading more oily/honey-like waxes difficult as you must be careful not to let the wick stick to the packing tool, otherwise you will make a mess of the tank and potentially tear the wick out, damaging your tank.
Other than that, the original GTank offers a nice, smooth hit with lots of vapor! After switching between the glass and plastic original GTanks, I did not notice the plastic sleeve having any effect on the flavor of the vapor which is good as I would recommend the plastic GTank to people who are constantly on the go – simply because they are much more durable than the glass tanks.
If you find yourself having to replace your original GTanks often due to loading mishaps, I do suggest purchasing the Essential Oil GTank (right)
which eliminates the wick system completely and features a titanium “nail” which houses the heating element inside. The head of the nail heats to ungoverned temperatures which melts down your wax, allowing it to drip down to the bottom of the tank. The rest of the nail heats up so that any wax that runs to the bottom of the tanks is sure to be vaporized, allowing you to smoke your supply to the very last drop. This tank is only available with a glass sleeve however you can order replacement sleeves online at a very affordable price should anything happen to the original. The essential oils tank produces a much finer vapor which does seem to taste better as compared to the original GTank. The essential oils tank will cost you about $50.00 and it is well worth the investment. I must note that this tank is unbelievably easy to load as the glass sleeve and heating element are at an even level which gives you plenty of room to work with when loading the tank and you don’t have to worry about any wick getting caught on the packing tool.
The original GPen battery does seem to have a long life span and it also charges rather quickly, providing hours of smoking pleasure before needing to be charged. One feature I appreciate is the ability to lock and unlock your GPen by clicking the button five times – this prevents your GPen from going off during travel, thus saving your battery life for when you actually need it.
With all things considered, I would give the original GPen an easy 9 out of 10! Its quality in construction as well as having an impressive range of accessories to enhance your smoking experience make the original GPen a must have for any dabber.

Grenco Science also sent us some of their Micro G boxes to try out. The first thing I noticed was the size of the Micro G, it is much smaller than the original GPen (it fits into the palm of your hand) and is extremely lightweight when compared to the GPen. As they say, “good things come in small packages” which is especially true when it comes to the Micro G box, included are TWO batteries, TWO mouth pieces and TWO heating elements. Also included are a packing tool, two glass jars, a pack of rubber mouth piece covers, a wall plug and a USB charger. Though the package is slightly more expensive than the original GPen (starting at $99.95) you definitely get plenty of bang for your buck.
The Micro G works the same as the original GPen, only in a much more simplistic way. First off, there is no glass or plastic tank – just a heating element surrounded by a metal “sleeve”. When you look inside of this element, you will notice a small wick running through the heating coil. Unlike the original GTanks which also implement the wick design, you would have to try hard to mess up the wick or heating coil. You simply use the packing tool to put a dab of wax on the heating element, place the mouth piece on the battery and you are good to go! If you happen to be using a more oil-based or “honey” wax and you are having difficulty getting it directly on the heating coil – no worries! Just scrape it off on the sides of the metal sleeve and let the heat take care of the rest. Once hot, the wax will run down to the heating coil and wick.
Now for the good part – not only is the Micro G extremely easy to use, it produces MASSIVE vapor hits – even bigger than the original GPen, which came as a pleasant surprise. Another plus to the Micro G is that it is impossible to clog! The original GPen can become clogged over time and may require cleaning to obtain an easy hit, however the Micro G will provide the smoothest, easiest hits 100% of the time.
As with the original GPen, the Micro G also features the five-click lock/unlock system which does come in handy. The battery also features a simple plug and charge design which differs from the original GPen. Instead of unscrewing your battery from the tank and screwing it into the charging chord (containing contacts which may need cleaning from time to time), you simply plug the charging cable into the Micro G battery and walk away. A little red light indicates that the battery is charging and goes out once the charge is complete.
To sum it all up, the Micro G gives the original GPen a run for its money even though it is extremely lightweight and less than half of its size! There is no glass or plastic sleeves to break and virtually no chance of the wick or heating coil being damaged. Because of its ease of use, simplistic design and unbelievable vapor production, I have to give the Micro G an easy 10 out of 10! Plus you get TWO Micro Gs with every kit! Not to mention replacement parts are extremely affordable, which is another bonus that comes with purchasing a Micro G kit.
